Who is Dr Ronan McSorley?

“I grew up in the north of Ireland and spent many years working as a Clinical Psychologist in England. I am currently based in Philadelphia, USA, where I work as a Compassionate Inquiry Practitioner. I am a cisgendered white man and use he/him pronouns. My work is guided by the principles of truth, justice and liberation.

I specialize in the psychology of trauma and am a critic of the traditional medical model approach to mental health treatment. I adopt a non-diagnostic and non-pharmacological method in my work. This means I won’t diagnose you, prescribe drugs, or follow manualized therapy protocols. Instead, I focus on helping you navigate the specific circumstances and contexts that cause you distress so that you can find your unique path to healing”.

Who does Dr Ronan McSorley work with?

“I work with clients worldwide via Zoom and welcome people of all genders, sexual orientations, races, cultures, ethnicities, nationalities, religions and socioeconomic backgrounds. I offer an LGBTQ+ affirmative space. I recognise that gender is a spectrum and trans people exist.

I help people to navigate experiences of profound sadness, deep despair, emotional turbulence, overwhelming fear, obsessive thinking and extreme mood swings.

Many of the people who come to see me are seeking to understand and integrate past experiences, feeling intense anger about what is happening in the world or searching for greater meaning and purpose in their lives. Sometimes people come to me with a vague but persistent sense that something needs to be explored—often tied to deep existential themes.

I have experience helping those who have been harmed as a result of psychiatric treatment or have not found traditional therapeutic approaches helpful.”

How does Dr Ronan McSorley work?

“In our Compassionate Inquiry sessions, we will uncover the meaning and significance of your psychological distress. This process involves exploring the beliefs, assumptions and adaptations developed in childhood. You will become conscious of and learn to break free from self-limiting patterns, paving the way for healing and growth.

This approach is informed by the latest psychological research on the effects of trauma on the body. You will learn how to be with difficult physical sensations, find safety within your nervous system and cultivate a sense of calm, presence and connection.

I believe it is also crucial to move ‘beyond psychology’ in order to address dimensions that transcend the traditional boundaries of therapy. This includes aspects to do with spiritual development, as well as reflecting on the political, economic and social factors that shape our daily realities."
